Firefighter Paramedic Brandon “Mitch” Underhill

Lake Valley Fire Protection District is deeply saddened to announce the unexpected death of 34 year old Firefighter Paramedic Brandon “Mitch” Underhill on Sunday, September 29, 2013.  Mitch joined the Fire District as a paid professional on September 27, 2005 and served the community with dedication and devotion for just over eight years until his untimely death.  

Mitch is survived by his wife and two young children, his parents, and a sister and brother. Donations to help out the family in these toughest of times can be made at any El Dorado Savings bank branch under the name of the “Underhill Family Fund”. A website has been set up at

Memorial Service Information

A memorial celebration of Brandon “Mitch” Underhill’s life is scheduled for Sunday, October 20, 2013 at St Theresa’s Church located at 1041 Lyons Ave, South Lake Tahoe CA 96150. A procession of fire apparatus will form up at Lake Valley Fire District, Station 7, located at 2211 Keetak Street in South Lake Tahoe CA 96150 at 1300. The procession will depart Station 7 at 1400 and arrive at St Theresa’s at approximately 1430. A full honors memorial service will take place after the procession arrives followed by a reception also at St Theresa’s in the neighboring hall.

  • MontBleu Resort Area - Parking Lot and adjacent Pony Express Field
  • 8 a.m - 11 a.m. Tethered hot air balloon rides (weather permitting)
  • 8 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Pancake breakfast
  • 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. Family fun zone with games and activities, photo opportunities with Smokey Bear & firefighters, information booths, demonstrations, fire engines and exhibits

Wildfire Awareness Week sparks an important time for homeowners in the Lake Tahoe Basin to reduce the risk of wildfire on their property and around their home.

Join local fire protection agencies for a fun-filled Lake Tahoe Wildfire Awareness Week Kick-off Event to learn about fire safety and creating defensible space.

With a dry summer ahead, fire districts are reminding everyone that fuel reduction is not a “bunch of hot air,” and will be offering free tethered hot air balloon rides in the Smokey Bear balloon (weather permitting).  Passengers will see the effects of recent wildfires as well as views of beautiful Lake Tahoe.
